Carlos Miyares

Carlos Miyares is a cuban saxophonist, composer and arranger who was born in Santiago de Cuba, a land characterized by its rich musical tradition. He began his music studies specializing in piano, which he dropped in his fourth year to start playing the saxophone. Miyares started his professional career touring internationally in 1998. He joined Chucho Valdés & The Afro-Cuban Messengers and participated in the recording of Chucho’s Steps, which received a GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. In 2010, he recorded his first solo CD titled Chucho Valdés Introducing Carlos Miyares, for which he served as a composer, arranger and musical producer together with Chucho Valdés. Shortly afterwards, he founded the Carlos Miyares & The Cuban Quintet, performing in Cuba and abroad. Miyares has gained recognition for his contributions to Afro Cuban and Latin jazz.He has collaborated on more than 50 CDs and DVDs, as well as music for cinema. Miyares has performed with Chucho Valdes on numerous prestigious stages the world over, including Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz in Marciac, Jazz à Vienne, Stockholm Jazz Festival, Barcelona Jazz Festival,Enjoy Jazz Festival,Marseille Jazz des Cinq Continents, Jazz a Juan,Jazz a la Villette, Berklee College of Music, Puebla Internacional Festival, Jazz Plaza Festival and many more. Has also worked with artists including Archie Shepp, Roberto Carcasses,Harold Lopez Nussa, Roberto Fonseca, Horacio “El Negro” Hernández, Omara Portuondo, Carlos Valera, Zuccero, Francisco Cespedes, Antonio Sanchez, among others. His most recent release is the CD One More Time.
