FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What information is important when I'm looking for a new mouthpiece to get a particular sound?

To ask for a recommendation, we need to know what mouthpiece are you playing on now, and how do you want your sound to be different from that one?

I want to better understand some commonly used, but not often defined, terms like fat, round, core, spread, colorful.

FAT: A full-bodied sound that has a sense of width to it and does not sound nasal or whiny.

CORE: A feeling of a big center and thickness to the sound. As opposed to a diffuse sound that does not give a sense of weight or thickness.

SPREAD: A sound projecting a sense of width that envelopes a listener instead of penetrating them.

COLORFUL: As opposed to black and white or grey. One may even get an inner sense of color while a colorful sound is being produced, as opposed to a colorless sound that does not produce an inner sense.

ROUND: More the Otto Link school of sound. As opposed to the modern high baffle ‘smooth’ Jazz sound.
